Colored pencils with soft cores, 72 colours to a set

Our colored pencil set holds 72 colours with soft cores that lay pigment down without a heavy hand. Soft matters for two reasons: light pressure still gives you colour, and a second layer still has somewhere to go. That is what makes blending and shading possible in the small spaces of an adult coloring book.

They arrive pre-sharpened, with cores made to resist snapping in the sharpener. We also pair the 72 with a 9x12 inch sketchbook of 68 lb acid-free paper for anyone who wants pencils and a place to swatch them in one box. Start a card, press lightly, then press harder beside it, and you will know each pencil in an evening.

Before you pick

Coloring books or blank paper?

Either. On coloring-book stock use light layers; on our 68 lb sketch paper the extra tooth holds more layers before the surface fills up.

Need paper too?

Pick the bundle with the 9x12 sketchbook. One hundred sheets is plenty for swatches, studies and finished pieces.

Buying for a beginner?

Seventy-two colours means fewer mixes to work out at the start. Greens, skin tones and grays are already there, labelled and sharpened.

The first stroke is only a test

Nothing on a swatch card has to be good. It only has to tell you what the colour does. Pick a pad, pick something to mark it with, and give yourself one row of honest tests before the real drawing begins.
